Tim Richardson, GrowthPath founder, was interviewed by BRW. The interview was published on Feb 17, 2011 "Why Online Retail Threatens the end of franchising". BRWCover

You can read the first page of the article here.

Tim notes that his message about the opportunities this offers was not included in his published comments:

"My interest in the threat online retail poses to the franchise model is not with the franchisees, but in the opportunity this change offers Australian SMEs. GrowthPath, through our Focused Agile Business program, prepares SMEs to win from disruptive changes. The FAB program shows how to focus on those changes which offer opportunities, and gives SMEs the training and tools to make the decisive, accurate decisions needed to turn opportunity into growth.

In my interview with the BRW, I stressed that in revolutions there are winners and losers. The franchise model is inherently conflicted. The franchisees purchase exclusive geographic rights in return for financing a traditional supply chain, with multiple stocks points and large investments in retail floor space. Online retail and the high AUD have seriously undermined this way of doing business. The full article, particularly the comments by Adrian Bortignon of Comument, offers the franchise model some possible solutions. However, these will take time to develop, and are constrained because any solutions must respect the geographic licence of the typical franchise agreeement.

Focused, agile businesses can take advantage of the delay and difficulties faced by large competitors. My message is much more upbeat than the 'end of franchising'. The end of one business model is bad news for the dinosaurs, but good news for the smaller, nimbler animals waiting for their chance, and that's where GrowthPath enters the picture.

Unfortunately, this postive message about creative destruction did not suit the requirements of the article, and was not published."
